KEY INFORMATION

English is a versatile subject which aims to develop reading skills through the study of a wide range of fictional and non-fiction texts; writing skills by writing for a range of audiences and purposes; and speaking and listening skills.

KS3

How many lessons will I have?

 In Years 7-9 you will have 7 lessons of English a fortnight.  1 of these will be in the Library.  Our KS3 curriculum helps you to develop the key English skills of reading, writing and oracy.  

 

What topics will I learn?

We study a number of topics including Myths and Legends, Shakespeare as well as contemporary fiction and non-fiction.  We look at different cultures and styles of writing to develop our understanding of why English is important to our learning.

 

What equipment will i need to bring with me?

 

For every English lesson you should always bring your basic equipment with you. You must also make sure that you have a reading book book with your also. You should also ensure that each week you are completing your two homework tasks of a ‘Read Theory’ comprehension test and learning your list of spellings.

KS4

How many lessons will I have?

In Years 10 and 11 you will have 8 lessons of English a fortnight.

 

 

What topics will I learn?

In Year 10 most students study for GCSE English Literature. Here you have the opportunity to study a range of literary texts from different periods of time including poetry, prose and plays. We study three main set texts: Of Mice and Men, An Inspector Calls and Heroes. You will also complete two Controlled Assessments on a range of thematic poems, and Shakespeare.

In Year 11 all students study for GCSE English Language. Here you have the opportunity to develop your reading, writing and oracy skills. Our course allows you demonstrate your ability to respond to and analyse a wide range of texts and to write for a variety of purposes. You will also complete two oracy Controlled Assessments: a group discussion and an individual researched presentation.

 

What equipment will i need to bring with me?

 

For every English lesson you should always bring your basic equipment with you. You must also make sure that you have a reading book with your also.   In year 10 homework will be set regularly using Google Classroom.  Activities will include: research, wider reading, planning and skills. s.   In year 11 we would also recommend investing in some highlighters which are invaluable for aiding you in locating key information.
